What Are You Tasting: 2012 Vietti Perbacco Nebbiolo

Vietti winery dates back to the 19th Century but didn't start making its own wine until 1919. Vietti is now considered one of the top producers in Piemonte. Alfredo Currado was one of the first producers to start making single vineyard wines. He is also considered the “father of Arneis” as he resurrected the grape from extinction in the 1960's. This grape is now widely produced and enjoyed. Each Vietti wine has its own unique label created by an artist.


This 100% Nebbiolo comes from Langhe, a subregion of Piedmont in North Western Italy. This wine is actually from vineyards planted in the famed region of Barolo, which has very strict aging requirements to be called “Barolo”. Vietti’s Nebbiolo Perbacco was released a couple years earlier to allow for an easier drinking wine. 


This wine shows classic notes of dried rose petals and mushroom alongside fennel, sandalwood, dill and tart cherries. This is a serious wine with strong tannic structure, so we recommend some food. The wine would pair well with most meats, but we particularly love it with pepperoni pizza. 


Although this wine is structured, it is still very approachable compared to Barolo. It's a “baby Barolo” you might say, for those nights you just aren’t quite up for the biggest of guns.
