2015 Viña Godeval Cepas Vellas
WINE: In the 70's a group of viticulturists created a program to revive the ignored and degrading Godello vineyards in the region of Valdeorras, in northwestern Spain. Two of these researchers, (Horacio Fernandez and Jose Luis Bartolome) then went on to created Bodegas Godeval, and released the first 100% Godello wine in Galicia. Godeval was also one of the first estate-bottled wineries in Galicia. Cepas Vellas means old vines.
PLACE: The winery is located in the region of Valdeorras, on a 13th-century monastery in the mountains in Galicia, Spain (pictured on the label). The Godello grapes are planted on terraced hills surrounding the winery. Bodegas Godeval was the first to plant on the mountain slopes in this area. The Valdeorras appellation is tempered by the Sil River.
PAIRING: The wine offers a delicate minerality and bright acidity with notes of wild flowers, green apples, pears and lemon zest. We would pair this wine with seafood dishes such as pan roasted scallops or grilled sea bass.
TAKEAWAY: Bodegas Godeval is responsible for reviving not only the Godello grape but a region that has a history of winemaking dating back to Roman times. These wines are still sorely under appreciated considering the great value they provide. This Godello is great alternative to crisper Chardonnays like Chablis.
