2015 Ameztoi Rubentis Getariako Txakolina
WINE: Let’s attempt pronouncing this crazy thing. Say it with us: Txakolina “cha-ko-lee-na” or Txakoli “cha-ko-lee”. This wine is made from both the Hondarribi Zuri (white) and Hondarraibi Belzta (red) grapes. However, the whites are the more predominant. These are slightly fizzy, super light white wines that taste of tart green apples, lemon zest and salty air.
PLACE: Txakoli comes from the Basque country in North-Eastern Spain, notably from regions such as Biscay, Getaria and Alavan. The vines are traditionally grown on what’s called the “pergola system” wherein the grapes are grown on a trellis Shaquille O’Neal might bump his head on. These pergolas are situated on hills rolling toward the ocean (picturesque much?). The proximity to the ocean and the tall trellising system help to produce low alcohol wines with high acidity and a lovely sea-salty minerality.
PAIRING: This wine is spritzy and refreshing with notes of jalapeño, lime, raspberries and sea salt. Try pairing this with a fresh watermelon salad or strawberries!
TAKEAWAY: Rosé season is just around the corner; get a head start with this unique, fizzy Basque wine. The traditional way to pour these wines is with a small spigot held from high up, into tumblers, this actions activate the fizziness of the wine, not to mention it looks downright cool.
